Dr. M. Susan McWilliams

M. Susan McWilliams holds a PhD in educational leadership and innovation and an MA in curriculum and instruction in education. She is an associate professor of early childhood teacher education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She is also an active advocate for community awareness of the crucial role literacy development plays in children's early years and stays involved in the Omaha Family Literacy Partnership. Dr. McWilliams presents nationally and publishes in early childhood journals, including Spotlight on Young Children: Exploring Play and Young Children. She is the author of the book, Beyond the Flannel Board: Story Retelling Strategies across the Curriculum (2017).
Teaching interests are in early childhood education and include courses in literature for the young child, language and literacy in early childhood education, infants and toddlers, introduction to early childhood education, and developmental assessment of the young child.
Research and creative activity are focused on emergent literacy topics and story retelling for language and literacy learning (in the birth-through-age-eight years).
McWilliams primarily engages with schools, libraries, and community venues to promote the joy of family reading experiences. She additionally serves on various committees at UNO and in the community.
