Dr. Anne Karabon
- Teacher Education, Assistant Professor
Anne began her professional career as an early childhood and public elementary school teacher and received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in early childhood curriculum and instruction. She is currently Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education and STEM at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
Anne teaches courses and supervises preservice teachers, leads professional development courses for inservice teachers, and instructs graduate courses focused on qualitative research methods.
Anne's research and publications focus on teacher education that supports culturally responsive and socially just practices for young children and families. She is particularly interested in practices that draw on children's multiple resources and knowledge from experiences at home, in the community, and in play to inform STEM content. Anne is a co-PI on a NSF ITEST grant researching how early elementary school teachers can incorporate biomechanics (how the body moves) into inquiry-based science and mathematics curriculum and also studies how visitors learn through play and exploration at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium’s Bay Family Children Adventure Trails exhibit.
Service experiences at the community, university, college, and department levels have significant impact on Anne's development as a professional. She serves as the faculty advisor for the Early Childhood Organization of Nebraska Omaha (ECONO). Anne is a member of the TED Graduate Elementary Education Committee and Advisory Council. University-wide, Anne is an executive board member and programming chair of the WiSTEM Pro^2 (Women in STEM) organization as well as a member of the UNO Graduate Council. She proudly serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Omaha Children’s Museum. Anne is a reviewer for multiple journals and conferences in Early Childhood, Anthropology, Qualitative Methodologies, and Teacher Education.
