Join Derrick Nero, COE instructor and co-facilitator of Project HALON, and students from area K-12 schools, UNO, and UNL as they launch a high-altitude balloon on UNO’s Scott Campus Friday, April 21
The event, which takes place at 10 a.m. in front of the Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI), is part of a collaboration known as Project HALON (High Altitude Learning Over Nebraska) where students help design, build and fly a science experiment that will be lifted into the stratosphere via a high-altitude balloon.
Project HALON will launch, track and recover multiple student-developed experiments from schools including Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, Marian High School, Bluffs Middle School from Scottsbluff, Nebraska undergraduate engineering students and UNO students from both the College of Education and College of Information Science and Technology.
The experiments will ascend to 90,000 to 100,000 feet and then descend to Earth by parachute after the weather balloon bursts. A “chase team” will travel to the experiment’s landing location. “Mission Control Omaha” will be located inside PKI and will provide real-time social media updates and monitoring of the balloon and experiments.
Now in its third year, Project HALON is co-facilitated by James Taylor, PKI research coordinator, and Derrick Nero, UNO K-12 engineering education instructor.
