School Counseling (SC) Program Options
Master of Science (M.S.) in SC
The 48 credit M.S. degree with a concentration in School Counseling includes the coursework and field experiences (practicum/internships) required for certification as a School Counselor in Nebraska. It is important to note that the state of Nebraska currently requires two years of teaching experience prior to holding a position of school counselor, with limited exceptions.
Master of Arts (M.A.) in SC
The 54 credit M.A. degree with a concentration in School Counseling includes the coursework and field experiences (practicum/internships) required for licensure as a School Counselor in Nebraska. The M.A. degree requires completion of a 6 credit hour thesis.
This M.A. concentration provides an opportunity to obtain experience in original research through completion of a thesis. Students considering this option should have a strong interest in research methodology and a specific content area of research. Students must follow specific guidelines and timelines according to UNO Graduate Studies, the UNO Counseling Department, semester schedules, and the schedules of thesis committee members.
