Welcome to What’s Next in Teacher Education

We are known for our work with our school and community partners to improve teaching and learning for Nebraska and Iowa children and youth.

Excellence in Leadership

The Teacher Education Department has a strong tradition of excellence in building teacher leaders who apply and translate what we know from research evidence into practice.

We demonstrate our commitment to our school partners by listening and responding to community needs as we celebrate productive alliances and partnerships. These relationships allow us to serve the needs of our teachers and teacher candidates by being responsive to our community while modeling innovative solutions, sharing new perspectives, and translating research into practice.

At UNO, we believe teaching is a practice and teachers need practice. Our Teacher Preparation program offers candidates a performance-based program that pushes the boundaries of traditional teacher preparation and gives future teachers structured time in area classrooms to practice their teaching.

Our program is modeled after the medical school experience at teaching hospitals where students are not only taught medicine--they also get to practice medicine under the close supervision of doctors and medical educators. This model is the future for education and UNO's Teacher Education Department believes this cutting-edge approach ensures our candidates are more prepared than ever before.

If you are a current candidate in the Teacher Education Department you are likely working in an area school right now and benefiting from having your faculty, coach and cooperating teacher all working with you to help you practice your teaching. If you are a high school student — or the parent of one — I invite you to come to campus for an up-close look at the exciting things we're doing at UNO and to "Connect with What's Next" in the Teacher Education Department.
