Proficiency in foreign languages and world cultures are crucial assets in a world that is increasingly interdependent and interconnected by global media and markets.

A Minor in Foreign Languages and Literature

A minimum of 15 credit hours in courses at the 3000 and 4000 level are required for a minor in French, German or Spanish. Native speakers of any of these languages should see a departmental advisor regarding the minor requirements. Catalog information

Why Minor in a Foreign Language?

Proficiency in foreign languages and world cultures are crucial assets in a world that is increasingly interdependent and interconnected by global media and markets. Graduates with foreign language skills and international understanding are better prepared to participate and succeed in the global marketplace. Our Foreign Languages Minor will help you become a more globally engaged and cross-culturally aware citizen.

Minoring in a foreign language will help you:

  • Gain proficiency in another language
  • Improve your cognitive abilities as you develop the writing, speaking, and listening skills needed to be globally engaged
  • Gain greater awareness and understanding of different cultural values, priorities, and concerns
  • Learn to apply cross-cultural awareness in social and professional settings

Minor Requirements

Native speakers of any of the languages below (French, German, Spanish) should contact a departmental advisor regarding which course to take.

French and German minors

All students must take the following courses: A total of 15 credit hours (minimum of 9 taken at UNO) are required, distributed as follows:

  • Conversation and Pronunciation: 3030 (3 credits)
  • Grammar and Composition: 3040 (3 credits)
  • Electives: any 3 courses at the 3000/4000 level (9 credits)

Spanish minors

All students must take the following courses: A total of 15 credit hours (minimum of 9 taken at UNO) are required, distributed as follows:

Heritage Speakers (native speakers) L2 Learners (non-native speakers)

Spanish for Heritage Speakers I: 3010 (3 credits)

Conversation & Pronunciation: 3030 (3 credits)

Spanish for Heritage Speakers II: 3020 (3 credits) Grammar & Composition: 3040 (3 credits)

Heritage Speakers & L2 Learners
Readings in Spanish 3060 (3 credits) Electives: any 2 courses at the 3000/4000 level (6 credits)

Spanish for Health Sciences minors

All students must take the following courses for a total of 16 credit hours (minimum of 9 taken at UNO) are required, distributed as follows:

Intro to Spanish for Health Sciences: 1140 (1 credit) Latin America in Context: Health, Business, Environment & Society Through Oral Practice: 3050

Spanish Conversation: 3030
or Spanish for Heritage Speakers I: 3010

Intro to Translation and Interpretation: 4060
or Linguistic Justice and Latino Health: 4330
Spanish for Healthcare Professionals: 3570

Electives (select one from the following):
