The Common Reader Experience
First-year students will come together before Convocation to discuss Wes Moore's The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, which explores the lives of two men sharing a name but very different pathways of life. Along with telling the story of two boys growing up without fathers in inner-city Baltimore, the text asks us to think about fate and choices and goals.
Students are asked to read the book during the summer and think about possible discussion topics. Co-chair of this program, Dr. Lucy Morrison, said "students at UNO have many opportunities to follow their interests, and the common reader experience launches their academic career with a shared experience and opportunity."
The goals of the Common Reading Experiences are to:
- Establish immediate expectations for engagement of students in an intellectual community;
- Provide opportunity for discourse regarding personal, University, community, and societal values;
- Foster a sense of community among the freshman class through shared academic experiences both inside and outside the classroom; and
- Promote interdisciplinary involvement in meaningful learning surrounding a single book.
The following events and activities have been organized to engage students with the Common Reader Experience:

|September 20||Choose Your Own Adventure Social Event|
|Saturday October 14 or Tuesday October 17, 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.||Service project|
|Tuesday October 24th at 6pm||Speakers' Panel in MBSC|
As a result of active participation in the Common Reading Experience, students will be able to:
- Reflect on their personal experiences and relate them to the common book;
- Relate their personal values to those discussed in the book and articulated by the University Honors Program Instructors
- Compare and contrast the academic expectations between the University and their high schools; and
- Articulate the importance of reading and discussion for academic success at the University.
