Combinatorics, Fractals, and Life

ABSTRACT:
A simple combinatorial problem on bit strings motivated by a problem in the study of complex biological systems leads to a new kind of fractal (confirmed by Mandelbrot) that appears to have nontrivial applications in complexity theory and extreme value theory. Also, some food for thought (pun intended), we speculate on the emergence of "organic mathematics."
