Problem 17

Questions or concerns about the problem should be sent to jwarnke@mail.unomaha.edu.

Two motorboats starting on opposite sides of a river race towards each other at different speeds. When they pass each other the 1st time, they are 700 yards from one shoreline. When they reach the other side from which they started, they turn around and move towards each other again. When they pass a second time they are 300 yards from the other shoreline. How wide is the river? Assume that both boats travel at a constant speed and ignore factors such as turn-around time and the current of the river.
