Selection Process

In order to be considered for selection, candidates must first be nominated by a UNO faculty/staff member, K-12 school faculty/staff member, or a community partner/organization (such as the Avenue Scholars Program) staff member. Along with the required nomination form, candidates must submit the following materials:

  • Essay that outlines background and educational goals
  • Letter of recommendation from the individual they are being nominated by that outlines their relationship with the applicant and why they feel they are a strong candidate to be successful at UNO
  • Copy of transcripts at their previous school (high school or community college)
  • FAFSA completed with results submitted to UNO

UNO Young Scholars Nomination Form and Essay Information

The strongest consideration will be given to candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • First-generation college student (i.e. neither parent received a degree from a 4-year college or university)
  • Demonstrated financial need but are not eligible for Pell Grant funding (i.e. Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is slightly above the amount to qualify for Pell funds)
  • Graduate of Omaha metro area high school
