Backpacking & Orienteering Basics Class
Classroom Sessions: Thursday nights, August 28 - October 16 ( 7:05 - 9:45 p.m.)
Map & Compass Field Session: Saturday, September 13 ( 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
Backpacking Trip: Saturday, September 20 - Sunday, September 21

This class focuses on the basic requirements of food, clothing, shelter, and equipment for living comfortably in the outdoors. It will cover backpacking, camping, cooking, equipment (including stoves, tents, sleeping bags, etc), and trip planning.

Outdoor Emergency Care
Thursday nights, August 21 - December 11 (6:30 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.)
Practical Exam: Saturday, November 15 (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)

The National Ski Patrol Outdoor Emergency Care class follows the same standards set forth by the US Department of Transportation for EMT-B’s. This class is intended for outdoor enthusiasts as well as prospective ski patrollers. Subjects covered will include an overview of human anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, soft and hard tissue injuries, environmental illness and injuries, sudden illnesses, triage, accident management and evacuation, and long term care. A valid OEC certification requires a CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification. The OVC will offer a CPR/PR course on October 18 for $25 to OEC students. OVC Volunteer Trip Leaders and Mt. Crescent Ski Patrol candidates receive a significant discount. Call the OVC (ask for Joel) to inquire about discounts or becoming a volunteer Mt. Crescent Ski Patroller. HED credit available; ask Joel for details.

Basic Map & Compass

Classroom Session: Thursday, September 11 ( 7:05 - 9:45 p.m.)
Field Session: Saturday, September 13 ( 9 a.m. - 5p.m.)

This class gives beginners the basics of map and compass work. It focuses on reading a topographic map, terrain association, and plotting a course with a compass. The class will culminate with a field trip to Hitchcock Nature Preserve to practice these skills
