General Programs

Leaders’ Meeting     
Tuesday, May 21(6:30-8:30 p.m.)                                                      

This meeting is for individuals that have an interest in leading trips or are already Outdoor Venture Center Leaders.  The meeting will be held in the HPER building, room 116. Agenda includes general news, confirming the Summer Schedule, Planning the Fall Schedule, and training in conducting pre-trip meetings.

Trail Running Hitchcock Nature Center                         
Friday, May 31 6:00-8:00 p.m.

This program is sponsored by Backwoods.  Bring your running shoes, technical running/hiking socks, water bottle and cool clothes.  Participants will join OVC leaders in exploring Hitchcock Nature Center’s hilly terrain. Runners of all speeds welcome. Those wanting to carpool should meet at the Outdoor Venture Center along the University Drive West at 5:15pm. Or meet the group at the Hitchcock Visitor’s Center at Center at 6pm.

The Outdoor Emergency Care class, offered by the National Ski Patrol, follows the same standards set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation for EMT-Bs. This class is intended for prospective ski patrollers as well as outdoor enthusiasts. Subjects covered include an overview of human anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, soft and hard tissue injuries, environmental illness and injuries, sudden illnesses, triage, accident scene management, and long term care. OEC certification requires a valid CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification. OVC Volunteer Trip Leaders and Mt. Crescent Ski Patrol candidates receive a significant discount. Call the OVC (ask for Joel) to inquire about discounts or becoming a volunteer Mt. Crescent Ski Patroller. HED credit available; ask Joel for details.

This class focuses on the basic requirements of food, clothing, shelter, and equipment for living comfortably in the outdoors. It covers backpacking, camping, cooking, equipment (including stoves, tents, sleeping bags, etc.), and trip planning. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend the class trip.  Participants must provide their own transportation to Indian Cave State Park.

Backpacking

Gallatin National Forest
Saturday, July 27th- Sunday August 4th
Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: Monday July 15th (6:00– 8:30 p.m.)

In the heart of Yellowstone country, the Gallatin National forest borders Yellowstone National Park and offers great opportunities to explore the beautiful backcountry for which Montana is famous. We will spend 5 days hiking around in the Hebgan Lake basin district, through huge basins and high alpine environments. We plan to hike in and establish a base camp where participants will have the opportunity to take day hikes and explore this country.

Rock Climbing

Blue Mounds Rock Climbing Trip
May 18th-19th
Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting: Tuesday, May 14th (6:00-8:00 p.m.)

The cliff face of Blue Mounds State Park rises from the sweeping, prairie like a castle wall; and offers a wide variety of top rope climbing opportunities.  This trip focuses on climbs ranging from 5.7 – 5.10.  This is a great trip for beginning to intermediate climbers wanting to experience climbing on real rock.  All participants are required to have a current belay authorization from the UNO climbing wall.  Belay authorization class is included in the price of the trip, contact the OVC at 554-2258/3342 if you need to take a belay class or renew an expired authorization.  Participants must arrange their own transportation to and from Blue Mounds State Park.  Camping, equipment, and instruction is provided.  This trip officially starts and ends at Blue Mounds State Park.

Basic Climbing Class (UNO Climbing Wall)
Tuesdays, June 4th- July 2nd   (6:00–8:00 p.m.)

Learn and practice your climbing skills during these five evening sessions.  The class teaches the basic moves needed for climbing.  Stemming, lie back, mantling, overhangs, roofs, and rappelling are among the covered skills.  The class is intended for beginners, but more experienced climbers can use it to refine their technique.  Equipment is included in the price of registration.

Hello Ladies!  Have you ever wanted to find a reason to break into the amazing sport of rock climbing?  These are the times to visit the UNO Climbing Wall and grab that chance.  Take a FREE belay class and receive FREE rentals regardless of whether you are a beginner or a climbing veteran.

FREE UNO/General Public must still pay the $7.00 guest entrance fee

Paddling

Beginning Kayaking Workshops        
Saturday, June 1 (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)           (Late fee after 5/24, add $10)

These workshops focus on the basic skills needed for safe and enjoyable touring.  We will teach efficient methods of paddling, maneuvering, avoiding and recovering from capsizing out at Cunningham State Recreation Area.  Workshop includes Deep Water Safety course. Participants receive additional workshop information once they register with the OVC.  Workshops will start at the Cunningham Lake boat launch.

Cedar River
June 14-16 (trip leaves Friday at 6:00 p.m.)
Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting Monday, June 10th (6:00-8:30 p.m.)

The Cedar River originates in the sand hills of Nebraska and mostly extends through an area of hilly land with moderate to steep slopes, sharp ridge crests, and remnants of nearly level plains eroded by water and wind. It is fed by groundwater from the Ogallala Aquifer and meanders in horseshoe bend fashion, nearly doubling back on itself at times. Wildlife thrives along the river with opportunities to spy deer, fox, coyotes, shorebirds, eagles, and turtles to name a few.

Kayak Rolling Workshop           
Mondays & Wednesdays:  July 8,10,15,17   (6:00-7:30 p.m.)

The art of rolling the kayak and righting yourself is taught along with balancing techniques in this workshop.  It is open to kayakers of all skill levels.  Bring a swimsuit and towel to class.  This class is also recommended to those working on an offside roll or high brace.  No pre-trip meeting.

Dismal River
August 9-11 (trip leaves Friday night)
Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting: Monday, August 5 (6:00-8:30 p.m.)

The Dismal River is a true Sandhills river, having its beginning and ending in the grass-cloaked hills that cover some 20,000 square miles in central Nebraska. The Dismal is a challenging river that runs deep, and fast in places, and is extremely winding.  It is the state’s wildest and most undeveloped river, and has been identified by the National Park Service as worthy of designation in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.  Mule deer, beavers, coyotes, prairie rattlesnakes, turkeys and channel catfish are some of the wildlife in and along the corridor of the river.

UNO Welcome Week Kayaking
Wednesday, August 28 (3:00—6:00 p.m.)       

This Welcome Week event is for UNO students only, and is free.  Join the Outdoor Venture Center out at the Lake Standing Bear boat launch for an afternoon of paddling.  The OVC will have a selection of Kayaks and Canoes available for students to use.
