Leaders' Meeting
Tuesday, May 8th (7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)

This meeting is for individuals that have an interest in leading trips and want to be an Outdoor Venture Center Leader. The meeting will be held in the HPER building, room 116. Agenda includes general news, conferring the Spring Schedule, Planning the Summer Schedule, and a training topic.

Outdoor Emergency Care
Classroom Sessions: Thursdays, August 16th – December 6 (6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.)
Practical Exam: Saturday, November 17th (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Written Exam: Thursday, November 29th (6:30 p.m.)
Make-up Exam: Thursday, December 6th (6:30 p.m.)

Outdoor Emergency Care goes far beyond basic first aid and also provides certification by the National Ski Patrol. This class is intended for prospective ski patrollers, but outdoor enthusiasts will find it very useful as well as. Subjects covered will include an overview of human anatomy & physiology, patient assessment, soft and hard tissue injuries, environmental illness and injuries, sudden illnesses, triage, and accident management & evacuation. This class does not include CPR for the Professional Rescuer, but it is required for certification. You can take that class later in the fall through the OVC at a discount price. OVC Volunteer Trip Leaders and Mt. Crescent Ski Patrol Candidates receive a significant discount. Call the OVC to inquire about discounts or becoming a volunteer Mt. Crescent Ski Patroller, ask for Joel.

Backpacking and Orienteering Basics
Classroom Sessions: Thursdays, August 23rd - October 11th (7:05 – 9:45 p.m.)
Map & Compass Field Session: Saturday, September 15th
Optional Class Trip: Indian Cave State Park, Saturday and Sunday, September 29th – 30th

This class focuses on the basic requirements of food, clothing, shelter, and equipment for living comfortably in the outdoors. It will cover backpacking, camping, cooking, equipment (including stoves, tents, sleeping bags, etc), and trip planning. Participants will provide their own transportation to Hitchcock Nature Center for the map and compass field session. Price does not include Class Trip.

Registration Cost: $33 UNO/$40 GP

Anchor Setting Workshop at Palisades State Park
Saturday and Sunday, May 19th – 20th
Pre-Trip: Tuesday, May 15th (7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)

This workshop will focus on setting quality top rope anchors. Emphasis will be placed on anchor design and setting, belay and rope management, and maintaining the margin of safety for climber and belayer. This class is not for beginners, you must be able to climb at least 5.9 and have a current OVC Belay Authorization. The OVC will offer a free belay challenge from the climbing wall with registration for this workshop if necessary. Participants must have taken the course before the trip leaves. Participants must also be able to attend the mandatory pre-trip meeting. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Mav-Kids Climbing Class
Tuesdays, June 5th-19th (6:30 – 8:30 p.m.)
           
For all you Mav-Kids looking for a great way to spend a few evenings, this class is for you! Learn some great rock climbing games as you practice your climbing skills and increase your knowledge on the fundamentals of rock climbing. The focus here is on climbing and learning new technique through interactive games. The class is designed for children ages 9-13.

Early Registration Cost: $30 UNO/$50 GP

Ladies' Night
Wednesday, May 16th (4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)
Wednesday, June 13th (4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)
Wednesday, July 18th (4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)

Hello Ladies! Have you ever wanted to find a reason to break into the amazing sport known as rock climbing? This is it.  Come in and take a FREE belay class as well as received FREE rentals regardless of whether you are a beginner or a climbing veteran.

FREE UNO/General Public must still pay the $7.00 guest entrance fee

Beginning Kayaking Workshops
Saturday, June 9th (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) (Late fee after 5/26, add $10)
Saturday, June 23rd (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) (Late fee after 6/9, add $10)
Saturday, July 14th (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) (Late fee after 6/30, add $10)

This workshop will focus on the basic skills needed for safe and enjoyable touring. We will teach efficient methods of paddling, maneuvering, avoiding and recovering from capsizing out at Cunningham State Recreation Area. Workshop includes Deep Water Safety course. Participants will receive additional workshop information once they register with the OVC. Workshops will start at the lake.

Kayak Rolling Workshop (STILL NEED TO CLEAR DATES W/ AQUATICS)
Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 17th – 26th (6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.)

In this class, the art of rolling the kayak and righting yourself will be taught along with balancing techniques. This is open to kayakers of all skill levels. Bring a swimsuit and towel to class. This class is also recommended to those working on an offside roll or high brace. No pre-trip meeting.

Early registration cost for all 4 nights: $40 UNO/$50 GP
Late Fee: After 7/3, add $5
