pin   Spring Problem of the Week winners are announced

First place: Alexander James with 12 correct solutions, second place tie: Jami Harper and Jaime Lopez with 11 correct solutions, and third place tie: Austin Brockmeier and David Loscutoff. Cash prizes are awarded at the end of each semester to participants who submitted the largest number of correct solutions. Go to the math website for additional information on Problem of the Week.
pin   Judy Downey wins forth annual Kerrigan Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics

Several years ago UNO alumnus, Mr. Patrick Kerrigan (BA 1973, Math and Physics), set up an annual award in the Mathematics Department to encourage and recogize oustanding teaching performance. Previous honorees have been Professor Valentin Matache, Professor Dora Matache and Professor John Konvalina. This year Instructor Judy Downey is being recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom and for contributions to several extra curricular activities such as Problem of the Week and Math Awareness Month. .
pin   Deanna Moisset receives Wu/King Scholarship

Deanna Moisset, through the generosity of Horace Wu and Kate King, has been awarded a $1500 scholarship designed to support graduate education in science and mathematics. The individual must be a K-12 teacher, pursuing a graduate degree and should have at least a 3.25 GPA. Deanna is a math teacher at Omaha Burke High School.
pin  Jami Harper places at Summer MathFest Competition

The Mathematical Association of America hosted the annual MathFest Competition during their summer meeting in San Jose, CA. By being the top problem solver for UNO Math Problem of the Week, Jami Harper participated in the summer MathFest as the youngest contestant. She placed in the top 15 by solving sets of timed problems.
pin  Angella Mertz awarded the Hitchcock Foundation Scholarship

The Hitchcock Foundation annually contributes a $500 scholarship, each to the Biology, Math, Chemistry and Physics Departments. The Math Department awards this scholarship to an incoming freshman who declares math as their major.
For fall 2007, the department congratulates Angella Mertz as the Hitchcock Foundation Scholarship recipient. She will continue to receive the scholarship for 4 yrs. by remaining a math major, maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better, and maintaining full-time status.
pin   James Earl Scholarships awarded for 2007-08 Academic Year

In 1973 Mrs. Margaret Earl set up the James Earl Mathematics Scholarship for UNO undergraduate mathematics majors, in honor of her husband, Dr. James Earl. He joined the UNO Mathematics Department in 1931, became department chair in 1932, and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1962.
The 2007-08 James Earl Scholarships have been awarded to the following students based on their overall GPA, outstanding performance in mathematics courses and their participation in departmental activities.
Kaylen Harris – 4.0 GPA, Math lab facilitator, Math Honor Student 2006-07, UNO athelete.
Joshua Koch – 3.789 GPA, math club/co-president, POW winner, Physics TA, double major (Math, Physics).
Brandon Smith - 3.956 GPA, triple major (Math, Computer Science, Management Info Systems, Math Lab TA,
Putnam Exam scorer, POW winner.
pin   Brandon Smith awarded AITP Scholarship

Brandon Smith, a triple major in Mathematics, Computer Science and Management Informations Systems, has been awarded a $1000 scholarship by the Association of Information Technology Professionals of Omaha for the 2007-08 academic year.
