On-Line Basic Skills Tests in Math and the Sciences

Abstract:
How do you teach a reform calculus course, which emphasises discussion and problem-solving and at the same time ensure your students have a strong grasp of core algebraic computations? One solution is to use the web to give mastery-learning basic-skills exams, while protecting classroom time for valuable human interaction. The presentation will showcase eGrade, a fully-featured on-line assessment tool which has been used for 5 years for this kind of testing at UNL and schools across the US. EGrade supports on-line homework, self-paced quizzing and study sessions, and applications of these features in math and the sciences will be described.
