Valentin MatacheThe Story of Invariant Subspaces
or the Quest for the Building Blocks of a Linear Operator
Abstract:
A proper invariant subspace for a linear operator is a closed subspace other than the null subspace or the whole space which is left invariant by the given operator. The existence of proper invariant subspaces for finite-dimensional space linear operators leads to very useful structure theorems. For decades it has been unknown if Banach space operators without proper invariant subspaces existed or not, on separable, infinite-dimensional spaces. The problem was solved in the eighties for some Banach space operators, but is still open for Hilbert space operators. The talk will surf this topic showing some of the main developments in time.
