Solution to Problem 10

By comparing the reading of his clock on departure and on return he knew how long he had been away. From his friend's clock he knew how long he was in his friend's house and thus deduced the time he spent walking. Adding half the time he spent walking to the time when he departed the friend's house yields the correct time to set his clock.
