Dr. Dora Matache has joined the Mathematics Department at UNO
in Fall 2001. She received her Ph.D. in mathematics at the University
of Kansas in May 2000. Her interests cover topics in probability theory,
statistics, stochastic processes and applications. Of particular
interest have been the applications to telecommunications. During her
graduate studies at the University of Kansas, she joined a research
group working on a project in cooperation with Sprint
Corporation. This work led to her mathematical interests in analysis
and modeling of telecommunication data, as well as queuing systems
with traffic models exhibiting properties like self-similarity and
long-range dependence.
Dr. Dora Matache has been involved for years in various teaching related activities including the annual Mathematics Awareness Month, workshops for secondary school students, tutorials for undergraduate students. Her background includes two years of industry experience at Sprint Corporation. She was part of the Network Forecasting group in charge of translating customer demand forecasts into network requirements.
Besides working in a real world environment, she acquired some engineering knowledge, and became familiar with computer software issues occurring in industry. Dr. Dora Matache has participated in various conferences giving a number of talks related to her research activity over the years. After joining the Mathematics Department, she became interested in several activities taking place at UNO, especially the teaching and research triangles, and using software for automated testing and grading. She is also one of department’ s webmasters this year. Dr. Dora Matache enjoys extracurricular activities like traveling and sightseeing, participation in continuing education seminars, visiting museums, as well as sport and reading.
