From The Chair

As we go to press, we are awaiting the results of a special legislative session to trim the budgets of all state agencies in the wake of the economic downturn. Nevertheless our department is moving forward on many fronts. We are the fastest growing and almost the largest department at UNO with respect to student credit hour production. This is a result not only of overall campus growth but also the huge impact of the new Peter Kiewit Institute for the Colleges of Information Science and Technology, and Engineering. PKI is attracting numerous bright new students to UNO and many of them are earning double majors or minors in Mathematics.

This years James Earl Scholarship winners, Aaron Becker and Jennifer Waldren, are double majors in Computer Science and Chemistry, respectively (the scholarship fund is almost depleted and we hope our alumni will help us replenish it!). This whole new pool of mathematical talent has encouraged our faculty to develop many new activities such as a Math Club, Problem of the Week, Putnam Exam participation and Math Awareness Week.

We now have 17 full time faculty members having just hired two new ones for this year. You will read about many of their activities in this issue. We also employ 10-15 part-time instructors every semester. They make an important contribution to our program. You will read about some of them in the next issue of the newsletter.

Faculty research activity has always been strong and highly valued. It has also been expanding rapidly in recent years as we continue to add new faculty. Some of these new research developments are described in this year’s newsletter as well as last year’s.

We like to hear from our alumni. If possible it is planned to feature the activities of one or more alumni in the next issue. Please make suggestions on who should be recognized and let us know if you have any information to share about them.

Jack Heidel, Chair
