One year ago Dr. Margaret Gessaman, then Department Chair, began this departmental newsletter. It is sent out to all Mathematics majors, undergraduate and graduate, on record in the UNO Alumni Office.
Many exciting things are happening at UNO and in the Mathematics Department. The new Information Science and Technology (IS&T) College and new engineering programs in the associated Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI) are growing rapidly. All of these new computer science and engineering majors are taking lots of Mathematics, many even seeking double majors in Mathematics. As a result the department is growing rapidly in credit hour production and constantly needing new resources.
Besides teaching service courses for all the new ``techies'' on campus and many others as well, our faculty and students are currently involved in many mathematical activities. Some of these varied pursuits are described in this issue of the newsletter.
