Mathematics Awareness Month
- [Posted: Tuesday, March 29, 2011 ]
Since 1991, April has been the month for celebrating mathematics and its applications. This year the theme of the Mathematics Awareness Month (MAM) is Unraveling Complex Systems. The Mathematics department at UNO is celebrating this event through activities including the Mathematics Symposium "MAM at UNO" featuring talks by our students on their mathematics research and a Student Poster Session on April 1, 9:00-12:00 in DSC256. The presenters are Kerrigan research minigrant students, presenting the results of their research in mathematics under the supervision of some of the mathematics faculty. On April 5, 2:30-3:30, DSC116, Dr. Vladimir Itskov from the Mathematics Department, University of Nebraska Lincoln, will give a talk accessible to all undergraduates and graduates with an interest in mathematics, entitled “Algebraic approaches to the network encoding problem”. On April 15, 2:30-3:30, DSC116, Dr. Alan Veliz-Cuba from the Department of Mathematics,University of Nebraska Lincoln will give a talk accessible to both undergraduates and graduates, entitled "The dynamics of conjunctive Boolean networks". Pat Kerrigan talks to Andrzej Roslanowski's Calculus I class on September 7
- [Posted: Wednesday, September 15, 2010]
The following are comments made during a visit I made to speak to Dr. Andrzej Roslanowski's two sections of Calculus I. My primary reason for talking to the students was to remind them that no one believes that Calculus is easy (in fact, for most of us it is a difficult subject) but that if the course is approached correctly, by getting good study habits in place, the results can be very satisfying.
