pin   John Konvalina wins third annual Kerrigan Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics

Several years ago UNO alumnus, Mr. Patrick Kerrigan (BA 1973, Math and Physics), set up an annual award in the Mathematics Department to encourage and recogize oustanding teaching performance. Previous honorees have been Professor Valentin Matache and Professor Dora Matache. This year Professor John Konvalina is being recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom over a period of many years.
pin   Jerome Drakeford chosen to be Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Initiate for 2007-2008 academic year.

The Eta Beta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the Honor Society for Continuing Studies, has chosed Jerome Drakeford to be the Honor Initiate for the 2007-2008 academic year. Jerome was chosen due to his understanding of the nontraditional student and the challenges they face in attaining their academic goals.
pin   April is the National Mathematics Awareness Month!

Since 1991, April has been the month for celebrating mathematics and its applications. This year the theme of the Mathematics Awareness Month (MAM) is Mathematics and the Brain. The Mathematics department at UNO is celebrating this event through a couple of activities including the Mathematics Symposium: Math Awareness Month at UNO and a Poster Session for Students on April 13, and a Problem Solving Contest for Area High School Students on April 27. The schedule of the events can be found at the MAM at UNO web site. We hope you will join us in the celebration of Mathematics!
pin   Brandon Smith places in the 67th Putnam Competition

Brandon Smith, a triple major in Mathematics, Computer Science and Management Informations Systems, achieved a ranking of 747 out of 3640 students in the 67th Annual Putnam Competition. The Putnam Exam is a high level mathematics competition involving 508 colleges/universities from Canada and the United States.
pin   Zyenyuan Wang receives UNO Award for Distinguished Research or Creative Activity

Dr. Zhenyuan Wang, Professor of Mathematics, has been given one of two UNO Awards in Distinguished Research or Creative Activity for 2007. Professor Wang joined the Mathematics Department in 2001. His research specialty is fuzzy mathematics.

pin   Dora Matache receives Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award for 2007

Dr. Dora Matache has been given an Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award for 2007. She joined the Mathematics Department in 2001. Three such $1000 awards are given each year in the College of Arts and Sciences. Previous award recipients in the Mathematics Departments' recent past are Larry Stephens and Valentin Matache

pin   Jay Hutfles receives Wu/King Scholarship

Jay Hutfles, through the generosity of Horace Wu and Kate King, has been awarded a $1500 scholarship designed to support graduate education in science and mathematics. The individual must be a K-12 teacher, pursuing a graduate degree and should have at least a 3.25 GPA. Jay is a math teacher at Millard North High School.

pin   Todd Munson receives Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

Todd Munson, a computational scientist for the U.S. Department of Energy receives the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Todd earned a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics at UNO, then earned a Ph.D. at Wisconsin. He has been employed at Argonne National Laboratory since earning his Ph.D. The award is the highest honor scientists and engineers beginning their careers can receive from the U.S. government.
