pin   April is the National Mathematics Awareness Month!

Since 1991, April has been the month for celebrating mathematics and its applications. This year the theme of the Mathematics Awareness Month (MAM) is The Mathematics of Networks. The Mathematics department at UNO is celebrating this event through a variety of activities including a Problem Solving Contest for Area High School Students on April 1, the Mathematics Symposium: Math Awareness Month at UNO and a Poster Session for Students on April 9, an invited talk on April 22. The schedule of the events can be found at the MAM at UNO web site. We hope you will join us in the celebration of Mathematics!
 
pin   Putnam Scores are in: UNO has a record turnout and places in top 18% among Universities in the US and Canada.

Last December, 14 hearty souls gave up a Saturday to face the most formidable of challenges, the Putnam Mathematical Competition. Not for the weak of heart!! Andrew Gacek led the way with 32 points (top 5%). Eric Manley scored 12 points (top 18%). They were followed by Travis Deyle (top 36%) and Zach Zaiss (top 42%). Tom Formanek, Paul Frederick, John O'Dell, Nam Pham, Vladimir Ufimtsev, Alex Vesper and Vince Wesselmann all scored in the top 60%. UNO's team placed 83/479. (We placed 67/476 last year and 97/453 the year before.) Congratulations to our students who make us proud!. Picture

Special event in the Mathematics Department: The Nebraska Actuaries Club (NAC) meets with UNO students. When: Thursday, November 6, 2003, 4:00-5:15PM. Where: Durham Science Center 115. Presenters: Max Rudolph FSA MAAA - Mutual of Omaha, Nancy King FSA MAAA - Physicians Mutual, Stephen Abels FSA MAAA - Mutual of Omaha. Abstract: The Nebraska Actuaries Club would like to provide information about actuarial career opportunities to the UNO students interested in statistics. As a profession consistently ranked in the top 5 by the Jobs Rated Almanac, opportunities for advancement based on your success are plentiful. A hard working actuary is rewarded both professionally and financially. Come learn about the self study while you work process, internship and networking opportunities from local actuaries.
