ABSTRACT:
In 1952, Ralph Bradley and Milton Terry published a paper which offered
a model for ranking objects using data from pairwise comparisons among
the objects. Over the past 50 years, this model has become the
standard methodology for analyzing paired-comparison data. However,
while one of the main benefits of this model is its simplicity, this is
also one of its limitations. The simplistic nature of the model allows
is only to be applied to a relatively small number of situations, for
example, each of the pairwise comparisons needs to result in an
outright preference, ties are not allowed.
The purpose of this talk is to give a brief introduction to the
Bradley-Terry model, then to discuss ways to extend the model so that
it may be applied to situations in which the original model is not
applicable. Examples of the use of these extended models will also be
presented.
