1. I have been admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences. How do I enroll for courses?
If you are a new freshman or a transfer student with less than 27 credits, it’s a good idea to contact our advising office as soon as you have been admitted to see if you will need to schedule an orientation and to schedule your advising appointment.
If you are a transfer student with 27 or more credits, please have your previous school(s) send your transcript(s) to UNO as soon as possible. Once the University has received your transcript(s), our advising office can help you decide whether you will need to attend an orientation session, which placement exams you will need, and we will schedule an advising appointment for you.
2. When am I able to register for my courses?
New students, whether they are new freshmen or new transfers, will all be able to register on the Open Registration date, provided that they have attended an orientation and advising session by then. Once the Open Registration date has passed, these new students will still be able to register via E-BRUNO through the first week of classes. Students who are currently registered at UNO will be given specific registration dates and times that can be accessed through their E-BRUNO account. (It’s under the heading “Holds and Registration Times.”) Graduate students have the earliest date, followed by Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, Open Registration. *Students who are in the Honors Program will be granted special permission to register during the Senior Registration period, regardless of their class standing.* The date and time you are given do not mean that you are only able to register on that day. It means that you are able to register from that day on until the first week of classes has passed. If you have not arranged to meet with your advisor prior to this date and find that you are not able to register because of an academic advising hold, you may not be able to register until you have spoken to your advisor, even if it is your day to register. In addition, if you have not paid your parking tickets, tuition & fees…you may have holds preventing you from being able to register until they have been reconciled, as well. To prevent problems such as these from occurring, please check your E-BRUNO Holds and Registration Link before attempting to register.
3. I’m afraid the classes I want will be full by the time I am able to register. Am I able to move my registration date up?
All registration dates and times are scheduled by the Office of the Registrar. The advising office cannot be of any assistance in changing these dates.
4. A class I’d like to register for says it’s “Closed by Department.” What does that mean?
It means the class is no longer able to be registered for without permission from the department. Usually, this happens when the class has filled and the department has resorted to keeping a waiting list. Call the department of the course to see if they are keeping a waiting list (not all departments do this) and if so, to get your name added to it.
5. A class I’d like to register for says there are no more openings in it. Is there any way for me to still register for it?
Only with permission from the course instructor may someone enroll for a course that’s already full. Contact the department of the class to ask how you are able to get in touch with the instructor. If the instructor grants you permission to enroll, he/she can do this by giving you authorization in the computer system or by filling out paperwork for you to take to the Registrar. Remember, however, that an instructor may not be able to grant you a seat if the room capacity does not allow for it. Still, although the course is currently full, it may not be in a minute or in an hour. Check the course enrollment often (via E-BRUNO) to see if someone withdraws, thus, opening-up a seat for you!
6. I lost my Personal Identification Number. Can you give it to me?
The advising office does not have access to this information. Only the Registrar is able to give this information out. Contact them to see if it can be e-mailed to your student account or go there in person (EAB 105) and have I.D. ready to show them.
7. I think that a course I transferred into UNO from my previous school should have been accepted, but it wasn’t. Is there any way to get the decision on it reversed?
There are various reasons why a course isn’t accepted into UNO or into the College of Arts and Sciences. If you have questions about why yours wasn’t accepted, please contact our advising office to see if your question can be answered over the phone, or whether you will have to bring in a course description and/or syllabus for the Dean or the department to evaluate. When in doubt, bringing in a course description or syllabus is always a good idea.
8. I think I’m close to graduation. What do I do?
Schedule an appointment to meet with your departmental advisor. Then, schedule an appointment to meet with one of the Associate Deans in the Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office. The Dean will check on your generals and total number of credits to make sure you have the minimum 125 credits and that all your general requirements are being or have been fulfilled. Once you are certain that all the courses you need for your degree are being taken care of, you will need to apply for graduation via your E-BRUNO account.
9. What is the status of my financial aid?
The advising office does not have access to any student’s financial status, including tuition and fees. If you are concerned about the status of your financial aid, please call the Financial Aid Office at 402-554-2327.
10. I need to talk to my advisor, but I don’t know who it is.
If you are a 1st or 2nd semester freshman, your advising will be done by our office. If you have a major declared and have earned 25 or more credits, a copy of your file may have been sent to the department of your major and you may have an advisor in that department now who is able to help you with the courses required for your major. During this period of transition, you can find out the status of your file by calling our office. Once you know that you have a departmental advisor, you are no longer required to see our office, but it is a good idea to check-in every once in a while to make sure all your general requirements are being met and that everything is on track for graduation. We encourage you, if you have any sort of questions about your generals, to come talk to us.
11. I want to change my major/minor to something else within Arts and Sciences. How do I do this?
You may e-mail one of the advising assistants, Rachel and Donna, or call them at 402-554-2458 and they can change your information in the system or direct you to the people who can. If you would be transferring into the College of Arts and Sciences, come into our office to fill out a change of major form. The process is quick and easy to do.
12. How do I find out about scholarships available to me?
Scholarship information is available in every major department, as well as at the Financial Aid Office. There is also free scholarship information available at Education Quest in the Rockbrook Plaza, here in Omaha. Their phone number is 402-391-4033 and they are located at 11031 Elm Street.
13. How can I get involved in student activities?
UNOmaha students have access to hundreds of activities and groups related to specific academic, social, cultural or political interests. Not only does involvement in these groups build leadership, communication and organizational skills, but it also allows you to make new friends with other students who have similar interests.
14. What is the difference between a double major and a double degree?
For any bachelor’s degree in Arts and Sciences, you have to complete at least 125 credits consisting of our general requirements and the major requirements. If you add another major, you only have to complete the additional major requirements. You will receive only one diploma. If you add another degree, however, you have to complete at least 155 credits consisting of the general requirements for each college as well as both major requirements. You will receive two diplomas. If you add a degree that’s offered in the same college as your first degree, your general requirements won’t change that much, if at all. If the second degree is through a different college, that college would evaluate your transcript and tell you if more general requirements were needed.
15. How do I know if I have officially declared my major or minor?
In your E-BRUNO account, you can choose the option, “View Unofficial Transcript.” Near the top of your transcript, you should be able to see your college, degree and majors/minors. If, for any reason, you aren’t able to view this, please contact our advising office.
