Joanne Sowell is a Professor of Art History and teaches courses in ancient, medieval, and cross-cultural art history. She has published on medieval architecture and on the pedagogy of art history, particularly concerning active and cross-cultural learning. As a consultant for the Center for Innovation in Arts Education at UNO, she has been active in planning and presenting the Prairie Visions Summer Institute for K-12 teachers. She teaches a course on women in ancient and medieval art which includes considerations of the representation of women in art, of women's role in the societies of this period as related to their representation in art, of women's possible roles as artists during the period, and of the feminist critique of traditional views of art history and archaeology.
