UNO to Celebrate Day of the Dead Nov. 2
The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies of the Great Plains (OLLAS) at UNO will host a Day of the Dead celebration Thursday, Nov. 2. The event, a pre-Columbian tradition, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UNO Art Gallery in the Weber Fine Arts Building. It is free and open to the public.
The Day of the Dead tradition, later mixed with Catholic rituals, is celebrated throughout the Americas, said Lourdes Gouveia, OLLAS director and associate professor of sociology at UNO. In Mexico and Central America, people build elaborate altars in honor of a particular person or group. They then fill the altars with items that the honored person or group enjoyed in life. This year's altar pays special homage to Latina/Latin American U.S. and local artists.
The Nov. 2 celebration will feature an altar in the gallery and refreshments - Day of the Dead bread and traditional Mexican hot chocolate. A brief presentation on the history and the contemporary manifestations of the tradition will begin at noon.

The 1996 UNO volleyball team that won the NCAA Division II championship will be honored as one of the school's greatest teams Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the 31st annual UNO Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet. The event will be held at the DoubleTree Downtown, located at 1616 Dodge St.
Three former Maverick athletes who made their mark nationally will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame that night. Two-time football All-American Chris Bober, career baseball-games-played leader Greg Geary and track All-American Sheila Brown Geil will be the featured honorees at the banquet.
The event is open to the public at $50 per person or $500 for a table of 10. Reservations may be made by calling the UNO Athletic Office at 554.2506. The social hour will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a program at 8 p.m.
The 2006 inductees are as follows:
1996 UNO Volleyball Team
Coach Rose Shires, who was named the national coach of the year, guided the 1996 volleyball team to a 35-2 mark. The team had first-team All-American Amy Steffel and second-team selections Tanya Cate and Erin Shafer. UNO's only losses were to North Dakota State and St. Cloud State, and the Mavericks won their last 11 matches, including a five-game championship decision over Tampa.
Chris Bober
Bober earned first-team All-American honors as an offensive lineman in 1998 and 1999 to become the university's first two-time first-team All-American in football since Bill Englehardt in 1955-56. An outstanding blocker and pass-protector, Bober redshirted in 1995, played as a part-time starter in 1996 and then started full-time for three seasons. UNO won two NCC titles and made three NCAA II playoff appearances during his career. He was all-NCC twice, each time being named the most valuable offensive lineman. Drafted by the New York Giants, he became a starter in the NFL and later signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004.
Greg Geary
A four-year baseball starter, Geary set numerous season and career records during his 1994-97 career. He led the nation in bases on balls as a freshman in 1994 with 51 and set the career record at UNO with 145. He also is the career leader for the Mavericks in games played and at-bats and runs scored. He was a three-time all-North Central Conference player as an outfielder and infielder from 1995-97. As a senior, he set records for games played, at-bats and hits, while leading the team with seven home runs and 52 RBIs. In addition, he was a two-time selection to the NCC All-Academic team. Geary joins his wife, Toni Novak Geary, in the Hall of Fame. Toni, an All-American softball player, was inducted in 2004.
Sheila Brown Geil
Brown Geil set four records and was an All-American in track and cross country during her 1984-87 Maverick career. She also won four North Central Conference titles, setting two meet records in the process. She earned All-American honors on the track in 1985 as a member of the 1,600-meter relay team. In 1987, she became UNO's first NCC cross country champion and went on to earn All-American honors. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Brown Geil also was a three-time NCC All-Academic team selection in both cross country and track, receiving her broadcasting degree cum laude.

UNO to Host Conference on Meth Treatment Strategies Nov. 2-3
A conference focusing on the best practices for treating methamphetamine addiction will be held at UNO Nov. 2-3 for substance abuse and mental health professionals. The conference, "Refining Treatment Strategies: Laying the Foundation for Successful Meth Treatment," is sponsored by the UNO Substance Abuse Training Initiative and the Alegent Health Community Benefit Trust.
The College of Public Affairs and Community Service (CPACS) at UNO recently launched the Substance Abuse Training Initiative (SATI) to address the need for increased treatment capacity in Nebraska. By providing education and training to treatment providers, SATI hopes to increase the number of Nebraskans who can receive effective substance abuse treatment.
The two-day conference will begin Thursday, Nov. 2, with a welcoming address from Kermit Brashear, former speaker of the Nebraska Unicameral and chair of the Community Corrections Council. Thursday's sessions will include an overview of the Methamphetamine Treatment Study, which was completed by CPACS in May of 2006, and an introduction to motivational interviewing.
On Friday, Nov. 3, Sam Minsky, a trainer from the Matrix Institute in Los Angeles, will be speaking about the Matrix Model and how it can be used to address the clinical challenges in treating meth addiction. The Matrix Model has been identified as the best evidenced-based practice for treating methamphetamine addiction.
"We have received a positive response from treatment providers regarding this conference," said Nicole Kennedy, program coordinator for SATI. "Research shows that recovery from meth addiction is possible when appropriate treatment is available to users. Thanks to Alegent, this conference is the first step in getting effective meth treatment in place."
Both days, the conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. All sessions will be held at the Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St., on the UNO south campus. The conference registration fee is $15. Mental health and drug and alcohol continuing education units are available.
For conference or registration information, call 554.3844.

Bucknell Geographer to Discuss "Women, Religion and Space"
Throughout her teaching career, Karen Morin, an associate professor of geography at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, has worn many hats - as a scholar, teacher and student of travel, gender and empires. She will share her focus on women and religions in geographic space and place at a lecture set for Friday, Nov. 3 at UNO.
Her talk, titled "Women, Religion and Space," will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Chancellor's Room.
The lecture will explore ways that religions regulate women's use of space and how religious women negotiate and define places. The talk also will highlight the ways women develop senses of themselves in space and place.
Dr. Morin's research focuses on the connections between British and American imperialisms, North American historical geography and women's travel writing. She also served as a Fulbright lecturer to Nizhni Novgorod State University in Russia in the fall of 2002.
"I am delighted that we can bring a scholar of Karen's caliber to our campus," said Karen Falconer Al-Hindi, director of the UNO Women's Studies Program and associate professor of geography. "Her talk is sure to engage a wide range of people. There are many students, staff, faculty and community friends with interests in this fascinating and important area."
The Nov. 3 lecture is sponsored by the UNO Women's Studies Program and the UNO Department of Geography/Geology. A reception will follow the presentation.

Prior to their concert, members of the band will present an improvisation clinic to UNO students while Jim Widner works with the Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra (MAYJO). Darren Pettit, a saxophone professor at UNO, directs MAYJO, an auditioned group made up of Omaha's finest high school musicians.
At 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, Widner and members of his band will present instrument masterclasses to UNO music students. The masterclasses are free and open to the public.
An alumnus of the Stan Kenton, Woody Herman and Glenn Miller Big Bands, Widner is a graduate of the University of Missouri and holds a master's degree from Memphis State University. He has performed with a variety of well-known artists - including Clark Terry, Louis Bellson and Marilyn Maye - and made an appearance before former President Bill Clinton. Currently, Widner is artist in residence/director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
"The Jim Widner Big Band is one of only a handful of professional big bands that actively records, performs and tours throughout the country," said Pete Madsen, coordinator of jazz studies at UNO. "The purpose of his visit to UNO is to support jazz and jazz education by providing the opportunity for the campus community and the public to attend a professional jazz concert," Madsen said. "The concert and clinics will give students a learning opportunity outside of the traditional classroom."
Tickets for the concert are $15 for the general public and $10 for students. For more information about the clinics, contact Madsen at 554.2297. To order tickets, call 554.3427.

October Spotlight on Student Employment
Is your work area a better place because of student employees? Student Employment Services thinks the following student employees from the UNO Office of Financial Aid are stellar and selected them as the October Spotlight on Student Employment recipients.
"They are the ones in the office that do the jobs that keep the office floating. I happen to have four great people as work studies. They get along with everyone, are fun to be around and do a tremendous amount of work for us," said John Jensen, supervisor and administrative technician with financial aid. "Our work studies do the little things in our office that allow the full-time people the time to concentrate on their jobs, which in turn helps other students to get the best service available to them."
The October Spotlight on Student Employment recipients include:
- Michael J. Fagan, an architectural engineering major from Hampton, Neb.;
- Charles Foxhoven, an architectural engineering major from Norfolk, Neb.;
- Sarah Hochstein, a public relations/journalism major from Hartington, Neb.; and
- Kelsey Sercl, a secondary education major from Monument, Colo.
"The convenience of having a job on campus with flexible scheduling, great co-workers and authority figures who help to put a face on the university is wonderful. My older sister worked here for a few years and I have for a few years, so the people I work with seem like a big family. It's amazing how much fun you can have while working with the right people," Fagan said.
Student Employment is featuring student employees from a new department each month through April. Featured departments will be entered in a drawing for an end-of-the-year party.
Departments also are featured on the Human Resources Student Employment Job Board on the first floor of the Eppley Administration Building. For more information about the program, contact Emily Muckerheide at emuckerheide@mail.unomaha.edu.
Students seeking work experience during school can gain assistance through Student Employment Services (SES), located in Human Resources, 205 Eppley Administration Building. UNO to Host Batchelder Biblical Archaeology Conference
The Bethsaida Excavations Project at UNO will host the eighth annual Batchelder Biblical Archaeology Conference and Reunion starting Thursday, Nov. 9.
Scholars from all over the world will meet to discuss and present their research on the 2006 dig season at Bethsaida, an ancient city located near the north shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Bethsaida was the capital city of the forgotten biblical kingdom of Geshur. It is one of the most frequently mentioned towns in the New Testament and the purported place where Jesus performed several of his miracles.
Gideon Avni, an archaeologist and director of the Excavations and Surveys Department of the Israel Antiquities Authority, will deliver the opening keynote address Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the William H. and Dorothy Thompson Alumni Center. His keynote address is titled "Between the Temple Mount and the Holy Sepulchre-Recent Archaeological Discoveries in Jerusalem."
Dr. Avni is also a lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology at Hebrew University and served as the Archaeologist of Jerusalem from 1989 to 2000. In that position, he was the coordinator of the "Jerusalem Archaeological Park," which includes the largest archaeological excavations around and within the Old City of Jerusalem.
Conference activities will continue at the alumni center Friday, Nov. 10. Rami Arav, director of the Bethsaida Excavations Project at UNO, will present the second keynote address, "A Milestone: Twenty Years of Excavations at Bethsaida," at 7:30 p.m. The conference will conclude Saturday, Nov. 11. Registration for the conference is $75 per day. Keynote events are free and open to the public.
"Over the years, the Batchelder Conference for Biblical Archaeology has gained the prestige of a high-quality international conference that attracts scholars and laypeople from around the world," Dr. Arav said. "It brings to a large audience the most updated discoveries and thoughts."
Participants are also invited to view two exhibitions of antiquities at UNO. Both displays (listed below) are located in 343 Arts and Sciences Hall.
"Silent Spectators of the Sacred"
The exhibit, a display of 1st century building stones from Herod's Temple Mount in Jerusalem, is on loan from the Israel Antiquities Authority.
"Ancient Writing in the Mediterranean World"
The exhibit - a collection of ancient writing implements, coins, Egyptian scarabs and figurines, and inscriptions in Mesopotamian cuneiform, Aramaic, Hebrew, Latin and Coptic - is on loan from the Museum of Archaeology and Biblical History in Albuquerque, N.M.
In 1991, the Consortium of the Bethsaida Excavations Project (CBEP) was formed and has been housed at UNO since its inception. Its mission is to excavate the ancient city of Bethsaida, research the data discernible from the remains, and disseminate the conclusions to both academic and popular audiences.
The conference is co-sponsored by UNO International Studies and Programs, and the Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford.
To register or for more information and a complete schedule of events, contact Steve Reynolds, Bethsaida Excavations Project coordinator, at 554.3108 or visit the Web at http://www.unomaha.edu/bethsaida/.
