Safety Notice for On-Campus Incidents

The following information from Campus Security outlines the university's safety and emergency procedures, along with other services provided by Campus Security.

Incident Reporting
Incidents requiring immediate action include fire, environmental spills, medical conditions, property damage, disruptive behavior and crimes in progress. Persons involved with or observing these types of incidents should call Campus Security at 554.2911. Campus Security will dispatch officers to the scene and, if required, contact 911.

Faculty, staff and students can call 911 directly, but then they also should notify Campus Security to help coordinate the response and expedite travel to the emergency scene. Emergency information provided by the caller should include the building, floor, room number, call-back number and nature of the emergency.

Evacuations
Faculty and staff should assist with room and building evacuations, and be aware of those needing special assistance. All employees should become familiar with the designated rally points for their buildings, which are listed in the back of the telephone directory under "Emergency Procedures."

Personal Threats and Harassment
Disruptive behavior on campus will not be tolerated. Threats or acts of violence should be reported to Campus Security and your supervisor. If the act appears to represent an immediate threat or harm to the individual, it should be reported at once to Campus Security or 911.

Personal Escorts
The escort service is available 24-7 for individuals on campus. Contact Campus Security to arrange for an escort.

Personal Safety Checks
Individuals who may be working alone outside normal working hours are encouraged to contact Campus Security. Security officers will periodically check on your safety while you are here.

Personal Property
The university is not responsible for personal property. Individuals are responsible for safeguarding their own property. Loss of personal property should be reported to Campus Security.

Alert System
A system to help facilitate emergency communications has been installed on the north and south campuses. Announcements are distributed from Campus Security to building public address systems or speakers located in building corridors.

When announcements are made, strobe lights will flash to notify the hearing impaired to seek assistance.

The system will be particularly helpful during tornado warnings. The announcement will alert building occupants to seek shelter and again later when the warning has ended. The alert system also can be used to announce university closings, confirm evacuations for fire or chemical release, or other emergency conditions.

More information on campus emergency procedures can be found in the UNO Employee Telephone Directory beginning on page 106. For more information about Campus Security procedures related to campus emergencies, contact Stan Schleifer at 554.3596 or Paul Kosel at 554.2648.

ARTSaha! 2006 Festival Sept. 6-10 at UNO

ARTSaha!, Omaha's only new music festival, returns for a third year. Running from Sept. 6-10, ARTSaha! 2006 is a presentation of ANALOG arts ensemble, in partnership with UNO and with support from the Nebraska Humanities and Arts Councils. Most festival events will take place on the UNO campus, and all are free.

The festival kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 6, with a nine-hour performance of John Cage's organ composition As SLow aS Possible (ASLSP). The following day, ANALOG will present the festival's centerpiece, a chamber reduction of Jean-Philippe Rameau's 1739 opera-ballet The Festivities of Hebe. Veering from baroque to bluegrass and beyond, ANALOG's production, featuring mezzo-soprano Christina Carr delivering all of the roles, will bring one of Rameau's most glittering and richly layered scores to new life.

On the third day of the festival, ANALOG will present a showcase of the short plays of Samuel Beckett, in partnership with the Bluebarn Theatre's Witching Hour. Featuring rarely seen works like "Breath," "Not I" and "Rockaby," the production will highlight the kinship between Beckett and music's avant-garde. The Nobel laureate's estate has granted special permission for staged performances of two television plays, "Quad" and "Nacht und Träume," making this ARTSaha! event one of the most unique in the American celebration of the Beckett centenary.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, the public is invited to participate in the World's First Aeolian Kite-In at Immanuel Field, in front of Immanuel Hospital. A collaboration between ANALOG and Midwest Winds Kitefliers Club, the event will be a chance for attendees to attach a noisemaker to a kite and join in an interactive airborne sound installation.

That evening, the festival adjourns to the newly refurbished Mallory Kountze Planetarium on the UNO campus for a concert of electronic music, an ARTSaha! tradition. Berkeley native Heather Frasch will mount a sound diffusion scheme for a program that features classics of the genre along with world premieres of multimedia works.

The festival concludes with a collaborative performance of Terry Riley's minimalist masterpiece "In C." UNO students will join with ANALOG and local musicians for a free-ranging performance of one of the sacred texts of modern music in the UNO Pep Bowl.

Photography Exhibition Opens Sept. 8 in UNO Art Gallery

ChiaraSince the 1980s, an estimated 150 to 200 million people have migrated from China's rural areas to its major urban centers in search of work, economic freedom and material prosperity. A compelling photography exhibition by Peter Szto, "The Floating Population in Guangzhou, China: A Visual Study," documents this mass movement of people.

The exhibit will run Sept. 8 through Oct. 16 in the UNO Art Gallery. An opening reception - including a performance of traditional Chinese music - is set for Friday, Sept. 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Szto, coordinator of the bachelor of science in social work program in the UNO School of Social Work, was born and raised in New York City. At an early age, the plight of the city's dispossessed and downtrodden impressed upon him the need to help. His current research involves documentary photography to study social welfare problems in China.

In the summer of 2005, with grant support from the University Committee on Research, Szto conducted a visual study of this floating population on the streets of Guangzhou, formerly Canton. The term "floating population" reflects their illegal residency status.

Szto's work, captured in a series of 20 images, depicts a visual typology of what the floating population looks like, where they live and what strategies they rely on to survive. The presentation philosophy, which contrasts with the "mount, matte and frame" format consistent with gallery showings of photography, is intended to foster the educational spirit of the exhibition. Each of the images is mounted on blocks of wood two inches thick to promote interaction between image and viewer.

"I hope my photographs motivate people to want to help, as they moved me to want to tell their story," Szto said.

Szto also hopes educators will use the exhibition as the impetus for meaningful dialogue on the issues it addresses. Instructors and community groups are encouraged to use the gallery space for these discussions.

"The Floating Population in Guangzhou, China: A Visual Study" is made possible, in part, by support from the Nebraska Arts Council and the following UNO units: College of Public Affairs and Community Service, School of Social Work, International Studies and Programs, Black Studies, Cultural Awareness Programs, Foreign Languages and Sociology/Anthropology.

The UNO Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building on the west end of the UNO campus. Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 4 p.m.; Thursday from noon to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

For more information, call 554.2796, or visit the Web at http://www.unoartgallery.org.

New in the Library for Fall 2006

In order to more efficiently serve the campus community, University Library instituted the following changes Aug. 14.

NU ID Number
The UNO community will now use the new NU ID number from the MavCard for library services, both on-campus and remotely. Users should present their MavCard at the Circulation Desk to check out materials and will use their eight-digit NU ID number to access library resources from the library's Web site. MavCards can also be used to purchase copies from the library's photocopying and print centers. In accordance with campus policy, only new MavCard and NU I.D. numbers will be accepted in the library after Sept. 8. Older cards will no longer be valid.

Renewal-Free Library Accounts
Currently enrolled/employed UNO students, faculty and staff are no longer required to renew their library registration each semester. Shortly after enrollment, students will be automatically entered into the Integrated Library System. Accounts are matched to current registrar and personnel data. "Needing to re-register every semester was too inconvenient, so we worked with ITS and the registrar's office to streamline the process," said Steve Shorb, dean of University Library.

E-mail Communication
Effective this fall, the library will exclusively use campus e-mail addresses (@mail.unomaha.edu) to communicate information regarding library accounts and related services.

Wireless Printing
Wireless printing is now available throughout the library. Visit the Reference Desk for assistance in setting up your laptop for printing to the Network Print Center. Only PC platforms are currently available.

For more information, contact the Library Circulation Desk at 554.3206.

UNO Campus Food Policy Reminder

Food Services at UNO has the responsibility to ensure proper handling of food and beverages with regard to the health and safety of all individuals on campus. As always, Food Services can assist you with all of your catering needs. With the start of the fall semester, Food Services would like to remind students, faculty and staff of the UNO food policy (below).

UNO Food Policy
All food served on campus must be furnished by the University Food Services due to health safety concerns. Exception(s) to this policy must have the approval of the Manager of Food Services or the Director of the Student Center, or their designees. This policy relates to the entire campus with the exceptions of the Alumni Center and Student Housing.

Bringing in food and beverages, from any outside source, for meetings (including potlucks) is prohibited. It is not the intent of such a policy to prohibit anyone from "brown bagging" for personal consumption. This policy prohibits the sale or giveaway of food items on campus unless it is for an approved bake sale.

Food Services may, however, grant exceptions to the policy on a case-by-case basis. Those wishing to serve food at UNO that was purchased off campus will be required to fill out a food policy exception form and submit it to Food Services, located on the second floor of the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC).

Exceptions to the policy will be considered if:

- The function is internal to a department or organization with no outside or other involvement;

- Food Services is satisfied that the group knows and adheres to health department regulations; and

- The group has an approved exception form.

To access an application for exception to the food policy, click on the link below. Exceptions to the campus food policy must have the approval of the manager of Food Services, the director of the MBSC or their designees.
