SPO to Host Benefit Concert April 3
The UNO Spirit Committee has designated this activity as a UNO spirit event.
The Student Programming Organization (SPO) will host a concert featuring The Rocket Summer to benefit the "UNO to UNO Hurricane Relief Project" Monday, April 3.
The free concert, featuring pop/rock bands The Rocket Summer and Epic Hero, will be held in the Milo Bail Student Center Nebraska Room and Ballroom from 7 to 10 p.m. The doors will open at 6 p.m.
While the concert is free to UNO students and the public, SPO is asking for an optional donation, the proceeds of which will go to the University of New Orleans.
"We have had the UNO to UNO containers at most of our events," said T.J. Jones, the student director of SPO, "but we thought we should plan a show that would put the spotlight on the fund-raiser."
Hailed as one of Alternative Press Magazine's "100 Bands to Know in 2006," The Rocket Summer is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Bryce Avery.
Since the release of his first album in 2003, Avery has toured as The Rocket Summer with Something Corporate, Hellogoodbye, Reliant K, Mae, Sugarcult, Jimmy Eat World and The All American Rejects, among others. His newest CD, "Hello, Good Friend," was released in May 2005.
"UNO to UNO" was set up in the fall of 2005 following Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans. The project is raising money to help those in the Louisiana UNO community who lost so much rebuild. The fund-raiser will conclude in May at the end of the academic year.
For more information, contact Erin Cron at 554.2711 or ecron@mail.unomaha.edu.
Those in attendance at the April 3 concert will be eligible to receive a "Spirit Ticket" from the UNO Spirit Committee. A drawing for one Island Tropics bath and body care gift set will take place. Spring 2006 BFA Thesis Exhibition Opens April 7
The Spring 2006 BFA Thesis Exhibition opens Friday, April 7, at UNO. A reception will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the UNO Art Gallery.
The work of Frances Osugi, Brandon Liebig, Kym Johnson Rutledge, Jonathan Sours and Alexia Thiele will be featured.
Osugi's thesis, "Hand Produced Books from the Monku-Monku Press," showcases edition printing in letterpress, woodblock, intaglio and photolithography. "The portraits and stories come from my life and my imagination," she said.
Rutledge's thesis is titled "Who am I? I am Everyman." This series of paintings is based on contemporary characters from "Everyman," a medieval morality play written in the 15th century. "Each character is a personification of a virtue or vice, and each embodies a part of me," Rutledge said. "My painting style expresses the movement of wet paint in order to bring life to a static state, as breath is to the body."
Jonathan D. Sours titled his painting and drawing series "Ten Accounts of Three Figures." It features three figures that are examined and deconstructed through repetition.
Thiele's thesis, "duplicate duplicate," is a reflection of life as a twin. It includes video, puzzles and collages.
The exhibition runs through May 5. The UNO Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building. Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are as follows: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, noon to 4 p.m.; Thursday, noon to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m.

A series of six weekly exhibits is taking place through May 5. This semester's work includes video installation, environmental transformation, political commentary and nostalgic feminist documentary.
"By using artwork, students seek to establish a significant dialogue between the campus and the community," Helm said. "Ventilation is an open atmosphere that welcomes people interested in investigating the boundaries of human expression."
Parking is available outside the UNO Sculpture Lab. Opening receptions are taking place each Monday from noon to 1 p.m., and closing receptions are taking place each Friday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

School Receives Kappa Tau Alpha Chapter
The UNO School of Communication has been granted a chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA), the seventh oldest national honor society. UNO received overwhelming approval, said KTA Executive Director Keith Sanders. Chris Allen, associate professor in the UNO School of Communication, developed the proposal.
The emblem of KTA is the key, the oldest symbol of knowledge and communication. The Greek letters mean "The Truth Will Prevail." The letters also suggest three English words: knowledge, truth and accuracy. The society's colors are light blue, significant of truth, and gold, emblematic of worth and high standards.
KTA is a college honor society that recognizes academic excellence and promotes scholarship in journalism and mass communication. Membership must be earned by excellence in academic work at one of the colleges and universities that have chapters. Selection for membership is a mark of highest distinction and honor.
KTA was founded at the University of Missouri and is one of 67 Association of College Honors Society members. The society, as part of its efforts to promote scholarship, co-sponsors the Kappa Tau Alpha-AEJMC Awards luncheon at the annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Since 1945, it has presented an annual award for the best research-based book published on journalism/mass communication.
