whatsup2005 Fall Convocation Oct. 12

Chancellor Nancy Belck will examine the transformation of UNO into a metropolitan university of distinction at the 2005 Fall Convocation Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The event, which also commemorates UNO's 97th anniversary, will begin at 10 a.m. in the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.  It is free and open to the public.  University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken will deliver welcoming remarks.

"For the past seven years, the convocations have given the campus community an opportunity to celebrate progress on the university's strategic planning initiatives and scan the horizon for new challenges and opportunities," Dr. Belck said.  "This year, the event will celebrate UNO's attainment of its vision of becoming a metropolitan university of distinction."

Also, the winners of the 2005 Strategic Planning Awards will be recognized.  The annual awards are presented to campus units that have embraced the institution's three strategic goals: placing students first, striving for academic excellence and engaging with the community.  One award is presented for each strategic goal.

whatsupExperimental Filmmaker to Make Film at UNO Oct. 14-15

Filmmaker Caitlin Horsmon will be executing her art at UNO Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15, in conjunction with the launch of a new experimental film and media series.

The series, which kicks off Oct. 15, is sponsored by Echotrope, a local arts group dedicated to expanding the presence of experimental art and digital literacy in the metro area, and the UNO Art Gallery.

Horsmon, the first filmmaker to be featured in the series, is an assistant professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  Her films and videos, which have been screened internationally, exaggerate the vagaries of the everyday until they transform.

In conjunction with the Oct. 15 screening of her work, Horsmon will be shooting and editing a film in the Weber Fine Arts Building and adjacent areas of campus as part of her media artist in residency Oct. 14 and 15.  She will then screen the piece with other examples of her work Oct. 15.

Titled "Made in U.S.A.," she plans to make a video about and at the site of the screening.  "For early cinema audiences, the appeal of this style of filmmaking was as a curiosity – the experience of seeing yourself or your neighbor represented cinematically provided a thrill," Horsmon said.

The end product, Horsmon said, will be an experimental video that takes seriously the methodology of the experiment – the outcome will depend entirely on the variables and constants at play.

Echotrope was founded by the wife and husband team of Jody Boyer and Russ Nordman, both art and art history faculty members at UNO.  Boyer serves as the group's curator/organizer, and Nordman is Echotrope's technical director.

"With this new series, Echotrope hopes to offer Omaha and the UNO community more opportunities to engage with independent film and experimental video," Boyer said.  "Also, with the creation of a new digital cinema program in the UNO Department of Art and Art History, these screenings will also serve as a way for students to become more familiar with new media and independent film and video."

All screenings, which are free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in the UNO Art Gallery, located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building on the UNO campus.  The schedule is listed below.
