Taylor Quedensley, an M.S. student in biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), is so intrigued by research projects on the conservation of Latin American habitats that he's making it his career.

whatsupCharla Series Kicks Off Sept. 28

The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at UNO will kick off its 2005-06 Charla Series Wednesday, Sept. 28, with a screening of the film "The Gatekeeper."

The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Gallery Room.  "Charla" is the Spanish term for conversation or chat.

The film – based on Drug Enforcement Agency and U.S. Border Patrol reports, along with firsthand accounts of hopeful migrant struggles – depicts the current civil unrest occurring at the U.S./Mexican border.

The screening will be followed by a discussion of the realities and stereotypes concerning immigrants crossing the U.S./Mexican border.  It will be led by Gustavo Cano, a visiting scholar in OLLAS and the UNO Department of Political Science.  Cano is director of the Transnationalism Research Project with the Mexico-North Research Network in Washington, D.C., and Chicago.  His research interests include Latino politics, urban politics, migration studies, ethnic political mobilization and public opinion.

Funding for the event is provided by OLLAS through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The effects of Hurricane Katrina have touched the UNO Athletic Department family.

Maverick football player Josiah McCormick, his parents, his six-year-old daughter, and his 13 brothers and sisters – along with their families, are all in desperate need of help.

UNO Athletics has received approval from the NCAA to take up a collection for McCormick's family.  Checks may be submitted as donations payable to the Student Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB).  The checks may be addressed to:

UNO Weight Watchers on Campus will host a free informational meeting Monday, Sept. 26.  The event will begin with a weigh-in at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting at noon in 103 Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building.

The program is a no-pressure, commitment-free opportunity open to all interested faculty, staff and students.  The next session will begin Monday, Oct. 3.  The cost is $119.90 for 10 weeks. Those who decide to join can take advantage of a payment option, which is two payments of $40 and one payment of $39.90.

UNO Weight Watchers On Campus is sponsored by the Wellness Stampede, UNO's health promotion program.

whatsupDepartment of Theatre to Screen "Stage Beauty" Sept. 30

In conjunction with its fall production of Jeffrey Hatcher's "SMASH," the UNO Department of Theatre will screen "Stage Beauty" Friday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium. The event is free and open to interested UNO students, staff, faculty and Theatre Arts Guild members.

The film is based on Hatcher's original play titled "Compleat Female Stage Beauty."

Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is the "most beautiful woman on the London stage" until the king renounces the royal edict that only men can portray women. Enter Maria (Claire Danes), Ned's dresser, who becomes an instant star, leaving Ned to suppress his ardent feminine traits and make a man of himself.

The UNO Department of Theatre's fall production of "SMASH" is set for Oct. 6-8 and 12-15.
