UNO to Celebrate Constitution Day Sept. 15-16
UNO will celebrate the creation of the U.S. Constitution Sept. 15-16 with a variety of activities.
In 2004, the U.S. Congress designated Sept. 17 as Constitution Day - a day to celebrate and memorialize the events of Sept. 17, 1787, when 39 of 55 delegates from 12 states discarded the Articles of Confederation and created a strong national government with the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
This year's celebration is the first nationwide observance of Constitution Day.
"Putting together our campus itinerary for Constitution Day helped us discover just how much students are already examining and valuing the Constitution in different disciplines and units across campus," said Jody Neathery-Castro, associate professor of political science and coordinator of the UNO Civic Participation Project.
University Library will house a display explaining the history and purpose of the holiday. This display can be viewed Thursday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Also planned is a video presentation containing academic discussions about the U.S. Constitution. Free copies of the document will be available, and related books will be available to check out.
Discussions in communication, political science and criminal justice classes will take place across campus, and a group of American Government students will host a mock constitutional convention, which they've tabbed Constitutionapalooza 2005.
The following events are free and open to the public:
Thursday, Sept. 15
"The Framers of the Constitution and the Art of Compromise"
Panel discussion featuring Kent Kirwan, emeritus professor of political science at UNO, and Jerry Simmons, professor of history at UNO
