Protect
Your Personal Information
Editor's note: The following message is from Wade Robinson, associate vice chancellor for student affairs at UNO.
With the start of the fall semester Monday, Aug. 22, there is a great deal of excitement and activity on campus. A major issue facing college students nationally is that of identity theft. At UNO we work very hard to make sure your student information is as safe and secure as possible. Please know that UNO does not release or sell your personal information, including e-mail addresses, to any groups or organizations unless required to by law. There are steps you can take as well to prevent against identity theft.
In the past, various groups have come to campus at the start of the semester in an attempt to gather information from you like your name, address and telephone number under the pretense of selling magazine subscriptions. I want you to know that UNO does not allow such activity on campus and that you should not provide these individuals any information.
In fact, if you are approached by anyone claiming to be part of a group selling magazines or attempting to obtain personal information, you should report them immediately to Campus Security, which is located in the south entrance of the Eppley Administration Building. The phone number is 554-2648.
The start of the semester is a time to meet people and take advantage of everything our campus has to offer. Our goal is to make the UNO campus as safe and secure as possible. Thanks for choosing UNO, and I wish you the best as the fall semester gets under way.

University
Library Web Site Features New Look
The University Library Web site has a new look and feel.
In adopting the colors and layout of the UNO main site, the library is showing its campus pride, said Stephen Shorb, dean of University Library.
In addition, the main page offers access to the library catalog, the Locate Journals service and electronic resources (databases) the things you use most right up at the top where you need them, Dr. Shorb said.
Other notable features include navigation tabs with drop-menus, and "breadcrumbs" (a line of text that shows users the full path from the main page to where you are currently) are available on every page. A new search toolbar gives users the ability to access the databases or search the library catalog and library Web site from any page.
"The University Library Web site is a work in progress. After conducting surveys and interviewing many users of the site, the design group has collected many excellent suggestions, which will all be carefully examined," Dr. Shorb said. "The goal is to fully reorganize the content and structure of the Web site by the spring semester, focusing on making it easier for you to find and use what you need."
If you'd like to let the library know what you think of the new site, contact Angela Kroeger at akroeger@mail.unomaha.edu or 554.3203.

UNO
Art Gallery Season Opens Aug. 26 with Two Exhibitions
A
pair of exhibitions featuring the work of Wanda Ewing and a collection
of Japanese architectural photography will open the 2005-06 season
at the UNO Art Gallery.
An opening reception for "Wanda Ewing: Dos and Don'ts" and "Kumamoto Artpolis: Architecture through Communication" will be held Friday, Aug. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
"Dos and Don'ts" an exhibition in four parts spans Ewing's artistic life as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute to the present. She received her BFA with an emphasis in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her MFA and MA in printmaking from the University of Iowa. She joined the UNO faculty last fall as an assistant professor of art and art history.
A self-proclaimed storyteller, Ewing said her work both humorous and political is about self-examination and the recounting of her life's experiences. "Knowing that my work creates dialogue or that it is thought provoking makes me feel truly accomplished," she said. "Through my work, I learn more about people, the world I live in and, ultimately, myself."
Ewing's series of 103 self-portraits is a visual commentary on appearance, beauty and race. Each rendering of her face, created with linocut and monoprint on white paper, is transformed by a different style and color of hair.
"Growing Up Black, Growing Up Wanda," a series of 10 prints that form a narrative, showcases Ewing's love of text as visual art. The UNO show will mark the first time this series, which Ewing completed as an undergraduate, has been on public display. Also included in the exhibition are a series of 10 large-scale woodcuts of dresses from Ewing's wardrobe and her refashioning of the pin-up girl phenomenon in a series of 10, four-foot by four-foot paintings on plywood.
"Wanda Ewing: Dos and Don'ts" runs through Sept. 20.
Kumamoto Artpolis, an ongoing project in architectural culture, began in 1988 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, a two-hour flight from Tokyo. Through the construction of high-quality architecture, the project, which continues today, aims to create and revitalize an enduring cultural heritage firmly rooted in the region that can be passed on to future generations.
Architects, designers and local residents work together to create buildings, bridges and parks that are in harmony with their respective natural and historical contexts. "The structures are designed to propose new lifestyles and new images of society, as well as create valuable assets for future generations," said Deborah Eve-Lombard, director of the UNO Art Gallery. "The program has played an important role in improving local culture and increasing regional vitality."
The Japanese photography exhibition, which runs through Sept. 18, is sponsored by the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago, the Omaha Sister Cities Association and the UNO Art Gallery.
The gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building. Admission is free, and gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
Excluding reserved stalls, UNO parking lots are free and open to visitors on Sunday afternoons.
For more information, call 554.2796.
