UNO Campus Weathers the first storm of the Season
By
Chase Moffitt
Monday, March 23, 2009 marked the start of severe weather in the metro. UNO Security also utilized its warning system the first time this calender year. “We monitored the National Weather Service (NWS) and once we heard the sirens from Douglas County 911, we issued our own [warning] for campus,” Paul Kosel said, assistant manager of traffic and security at UNO. Kosel states “we did the best we could.”
The storm rolled into the metro just before rush hour on Monday, temporarily delaying activity on UNO Campus. “We had two buildings, Landscape Services and the ChildCare Center, both located on the far West end of campus, lose power during the storm. However, they were back up and running before morning,” Kosel said.
As companies continue to cutback and the stock market continues to drop, you might look at another temporary source of employment.
"More students have been looking at temp agencies," says Michelle Perone. Perone is director of the career center at UNO. She says more students are coming to the career center looking for any jobs not only after layoffs, but also looking at getting in the job market.
Temp agencies are still looking for many people with varied skills. While many skills are required for different kinds of jobs, communication is the key.
"Communication is one of the essiential skills employers are looking for" says Doug Bergman, the branch manager of Manpower Incorporated.
CCHA regular season play wrapped up this past weekend setting the dramatic stage for the post season. The UNO Mavericks hosted the Mavs of Minnesota State, Mankato Tuesday February 24th at Qwest Center Omaha. Heading into last Tuesday nights game, UNO extended a 13 game winless streak that dated back to January 10th against Northern Michigan.
Despite UNO’s best efforts, the game ended 2 – 2 heading into a shoot-out, in which the Mavs of Omaha won in seven rounds. Officaly the game ended in a tie, but for Jr. goalkeeper, Jeremie Dupont, “this was definitely a moral victory for the team.” A moral victory that puts the team at a record 14 winless games.
Coach Mike Kemp wants to keep the team’s mindset ready for the high intensity play of the playoffs. “This break will be good for us, to wipe the slate clean and start fresh,” Kemp said.
The CCHA bracket is set for the tournament. After the break, UNO slipped to eighth just under W. Michigan who moved up to seventh after their victory over Bowling Green Saturday. UNO will host Ferris State University (March 6 – 8) Friday, Saturday and if needed in the best of three series, Sunday at the Qwest Center. This will be the seventh time the Mavs have hosted a playoff series. Game times are 7:05 pm.
