As part of an agreement with Strategic Command in Bellevue, NE, The
University of Nebraska system will receive between 30 and 84 million
dollars over the next 5 years.  The funding is to create a
University-Affiliated Research Center, or UARC (pronounced U-ARC).  NU
joins 13 other top-tier research universities with UARC¹s.  All four
University campuses will be involved in the program.

The roll UNO will play in the program will be in the area of
consequence management.  This means researchers will develop scenarios
and potential responses to events such as major floods or terrorist
attacks.  This research will help improve the military¹s response to
disasters.  The other campuses will contribute based on their
particular strengths.

Dr. Ann Fruhling, Director of the School of Interdisciplinary
Informatics, will be involved in the project.  She says NU was chosen
out of this competitive process due to the diversity and quality of our
research.  She also anticipates students being able to participate in
the research process.  The UARC is a very unique opportunity for NU to
contribute to national security.

The program is initially for 5 years, but it is highly likely to last
for many years after that.  The complementary relationship the UARC
establishes between Stratcom and NU will be beneficial to both parties
and long-term.
