Senior Capstone
The Senior Capstone in Technical Communication was the last in the series and is the reason for this very website. This course represents a culmination of what I have learned throughout the tech comm. program, and some of what I have learned in college. Of course, my learning extends far beyond what five classes can offer, but it serves as a good backbone if nothing else. In the Capstone course I had two projects, one was a group service learning project, and the other was a personal, professional, website geared at presenting what I can do in tech comm. field or related. The first project, the Service Learning Project, was very interesting because it involved community involvement and donation of time and resources to a non-profit, regional, journal called Fine Lines. David Martin, the editor and founder of the journal, needed a website that encapsulated the editing and writing style of journal. Each of the journal's editors had a different editing style and Fine Lines received submissions from many writers, each with their own style. That is why three students, I and two other graduate students, were charged with designing this site for the journal, as well as the creation of other print documents. We were also involved with weekly meetings with David in order to stay on track and receive feedback on our work. The experience was new and exciting to me, and it allowed me to develop my COP skills of negotiation even further, as well as my web design skills. At some point, I would like to be involved in other service learning projects of this nature because of the good they can do and what I can learn from them.
In addition to web design, our group created several print documents for the site that allowed users to access the web content in a hard copy form. The April newsletter is just one of the documents we created.
Finally, I designed this very site, which represents a sampling of my work in the tech comm. program and other related courses, and will serve as an online portfolio of my 'working self' that I can present to those interested.
