Sheila Korth

Growing up on a farm in Randolph, Nebraska, Sheila Korth found out firsthand you need to literally dig in to make things happen. Surrounded by corn, soybeans, alfalfa and livestock, she learned a lot about the family farm. That knowledge has had an impact on her decision for a major and a career.

"When I came to Omaha, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to study," she says. "I like computers. I like business. And I want to help my community."

Now a UNO senior, she's working on two degrees — in Management Information Systems and in Economics — and focused on a career in agriculture policy or development. "Getting information quickly and being proficient at business is important for farmers, not only locally, but around the world," she says. "I think MIS is an important part of the future."

In just three years, the Walter Scott Scholarship recipient has dug into lots of opportunities related to her majors. She's been a teaching assistant in two computer labs, had an internship in the UNO bioinformatics program, and worked for two agricultural-related business firms.

Sheila's UNO connections have also led to an ag internship in Washington, D.C., as well as a Truman Scholarship — an honor given to students committed to careers in government, nonprofits or public service. The Truman Scholarship will take her back to the nation's capital for a summer institute and an internship.

It's not all about studying, though. She's played softball, volleyball and basketball intramurals, is a member of honor societies and has volunteered with other students at organizations in and outside of Omaha.
