Halting Hate

Nebraska state law defines a hate crime as a criminal act against a person or property that is motivated because of the victim's real or perceived race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age or disability.

At UNO, the Omaha Hate Crimes Project, housed in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, is helping halt hate in its tracks.

This collaborative effort with the City of Omaha is designed to increase understanding across racial, social and economic lines. One of the project's educational arms, the Sister Schools Project, partners third- and fourth-grade students from different sectors of the city in activities designed to make them, as well as their families, aware of the diversity in their community.
