Most people go to movies for the pictures. Tyler Goudlock goes for the sound. The sophomore music education major finds himself intrigued by movie scores—so much that he plans to get into film composition.
Inspired by famous movie composers like John Williams and James Newton Howard, Tyler imagines his own name on the big screen some day. For now, he's content to create and record tracks and post them on his MySpace page.
Tyler also envisions a future teaching high school music. To hone his skills, he practices three instruments — clarinet, piano and sax — performs in the marching band and wind ensemble, and learns a lot from his professors. "As a band teacher, you want to be able to not only beat time, but also express what the composer has intended for the music," he says. "The faculty and guest conductors have taught me to how to convey emotion through music and learn about people's different styles."
Hanging around Strauss Performing Arts Center and performing for home games at Caniglia Field has given Tyler, a transfer student from California, a strong sense of Mav culture.
"I love UNO. It's a big, open campus — but not too big."
