Computing Solutions
Hesham Ali loves Nebraska and its people. Dr. Ali, a professor of computer science and associate dean in the UNO College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T), arrived on campus in 1988 to help establish the department of computer science, which became part of the newly-formed College of IS&T in 1996.
The collaborative nature of the college has allowed Dr. Ali and his colleagues to develop interdisciplinary programs, including a new bioinformatics program that represents one of a handful in the country.
In addition to his administrative and teaching duties, he manages two research groups – one in bioinformatics and the other in mobile computing. The bioinformatics group has developed a computational tool that was responsible, in part, in recognizing a new mycobacterium organism. The mobile computing group has been working on an ambitious project to develop wireless infrastructure in various Omaha locations, including Rosenblatt Stadium.
"Due to the many partnerships our college enjoys with local, national and international organizations, our graduate students have the opportunity to conduct applied research that addresses practical, real world problems," Dr. Ali said.
