The UNO School of Social Work and School of Public Administration offer prospective candidates the option to receive both graduate degrees offered by these programs (MSW and MPA) through the MSW-MPA Dual Degree Program. Students who have already graduated with a MSW or MPA degree are not eligible for this program.

The MSW-MPA Dual Degree Program consists of 78 credit hours for Foundation MSW Program students, and 54 credit hours for Advanced Standing MSW Program students. All MSW-MPA Dual Degree students must choose the Integrated Social Work Practice Concentration. Students must take a minimum of two courses per semester (excluding summer semesters), and complete both degrees within six calendar years.

MSW-MPA Dual Degree Curriculum

78-Credit Hour MSW-MPA Dual Degree Program

Students who have a baccalaureate degree in any major other than social work must complete the following MSW Foundation courses in addition to the courses listed in the 54-credit program:

SOWK 8080 – Human Behavior and Social Environment II
SOWK 8090 – Social Welfare Policy
SOWK 8110 – Institutional Oppression
SOWK 8130 – Generalist Practice I
SOWK 8150 – Generalist Practice II
SOWK 8160 – Generalist Practicum I
SOWK 8170 – Generalist Practicum II
SOWK 8190* – Research and Computer Applications

54-Credit Hour MSW-MPA Dual Degree Program

Advanced Standing students (or those who have completed the 24 Foundation-level credit hours listed above) are required to take the following courses:

SOWK 8550 – Social Justice and Social Advocacy  or SOWK 8560 – Advanced Community Practice
SOWK 8570 – Administration of Social Welfare Agencies
SOWK 8940 – Evaluation of Social Programs
SOWK 8240, 8250, 8260, 8270, 8280, or 8290 – One Advanced Clinical Practice course
SOWK 8600, 8610, 8650, or 8700 – One Social Issues/Policies/Service Delivery Course

PA 8050 – Intro to Public Administration** (serves as the social work general elective)
PA 8010 – The Public Economy**

* Common to both Foundation and Advanced Standing programs.

** PA 8010, PA 8050 and PA 8090 are prerequisites to the remaining PA courses and must be completed prior to taking Advanced Practicum II (SOWK 8410).
