Philanthropies

Sigma Kappa helps out in the community not only with our specific philanthropies, but other causes as well. This past year we have raised money for St. Judes Hospital with the restuarant Chili's Hope Campaign. After the earthquake in Haiti, we sold hot chocolate for the American Red Cross to go to Haiti. We also walked all night around the indoor track for the 2010 Relay for Life.

On the UNO campus, we have held Rock- A-Thon where we Rock in Rocking Chairs and take donations while rockin' out to music.

Gerentology

Gerentology is the study of aging. Often our girls can be found at the Waterford Nursing home playing Bingo and chatting with residents. We also like to make them cards and bookmarks just to brighten their day.

Alzheimer's Disease

In 1984 Sigma Kappa responded to an increasingly critical problem facing older Americans by adding Alzheimer's Disease research and education to its philanthropic activities. Research grants are made each year to universities and other institutions actively engaged in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease.

Inherit the Earth

This program ties Sigma Kappa's interest in older citizens with its interest in the environment. Through Inherit the Earth, collegians, alumnae and older citizens work together to improve local environments. Sigma Kappa's particpate in city wide Earth day activties as well as live it in their own life. We are currently in the process of adopting a highway.

The Maine Sea Coast Mission

We also support the Maine Sea Coast Mission as a national philanthropy. This is in honor of our five founders from Maine. Each November EK donates funds for medical aid, food, clothing, toys, etc. to families residing on small islands off the coast of Maine. The gifts are delivered in December by boat and is know to locals as the “Santa Clause Cruise.”
