service-learning's relation to UNO strategic planning goals.


Goal 1: UNO will be recognized as a student-centered metropolitan university.

  • Sub-Goal A: UNO develops and maintains academic programs and support services designed for the varying academic, career, and personal goals of traditional and non-traditional students.
    • Objective 1: Develop a diverse student advisory panel for SLA for the purposes of communicating student perspective and receiving student feedback.
    • Objective 2: Establish diverse models for Service-Learning Projects (One semester projects, sustained multiple semester projects.)
  • Sub-Goal B: UNO graduates are prepared for responsibility as active citizens through leadership, participation, and employment in diverse environments throughout the nation and the world.
    • Objective 1: Cultivate Service-Learning experiences with diverse communities.
    • Objective 2: Work with the Office of Career Outreach to assist students in creating a service component on their resumes before graduation.
  • Sub-Goal C: UNO will expand educational opportunities for students from under-represented populations.
    • Objective 1: Enhance connections with Omaha Public Schools and the Magnet Schools.
    • Objective 2: SLA will increase interaction with UNO departments that work intentionally with diverse populations.
  • Sub-Goal D: UNO will be the higher education institution of first choice for qualified students desiring a metropolitan university experience.
    • Objective 1: SLA will serve as a recruitment tool for UNO.

Goal 2: UNO will be recognized for its academic excellence as a metropolitan university.

  • Sub-Goal A: UNO’s teaching is designed to meet the multiple needs and highest aspirations of students drawn to a metropolitan campus.
    • Objective 1: Embed Service Learning in UNO courses.
    • Objective 2: Provide support and service to faculty.
    • Objective 3: Facilitate Interdisciplinary Teams (IDT) and collaborations.
  • Sub-Goal B: UNO will develop, nurture, and recognize academic programs of excellence.
    • Objective 1: Demonstrate link between academic excellence and Service-Learning by reporting conference presentations and papers published by service-learning faculty and students.
    • Objective 2: Establish funding sources for Service-Learning Awards.
  • Sub-Goal C: UNO will increase its stature as an institution of scholarly excellence.
    • Objective 1: SLA will host a regional or national SL conference.
    • Objective 2: SLA will coach faculty to publish SL results.
    • Objective 3: SLA will increase awareness of SL grant opportunities for faculty.
    • Objective 4: SLA will assist in securing UNO a place on the US News and World Report List, Princeton Review, and other publications.
    • Objective 5: SLA will submit articles re: South/North O Seminars, research findings, etc., for publication.
    • Objective 6: Share opportunities for students to present at conferences and provide financial support for participation when possible.

Goal 3: UNO will be recognized for its outstanding engagement with the urban, regional, national, and global communities.

  • Objective 1: SLA will establish a Community Advisory Panel (CAP) for the purpose of guiding and supporting SLA.
  • Objective 2: SLA will sustain relationships with community partners.
  • Objective 3: SLA will establish a tie with the UNO alumni community.
  • Objective 4: SLA will continue to investigate opportunities for international SL partnerships.
