Since 1998, more than 125 University of Nebraska at Omaha faculty members have taught over 530 courses with service-learning components -- 105 courses, with over 1500 students, in the 2006-07 academic year alone. More than eight thousand UNO students have benefited from service-learning during this period. These numbers have grown massively since the beginning. These student reflections begin to tell the story of what service-learning does.
The benefits are not, however, felt only within the institution. Over 200 organizations -- from the Fontenelle Nature Association to Heartland Refugee Resettlement -- have been able to better serve the community through the efforts of UNO service-learning students.
Over a thousand students -- at least 350 in 2007 -- have participated in the 7 Days of Service alternative spring break projects since 2003. This program has renovated 10 homes in North and South Omaha and, through a grants arrangement with Wells Fargo Bank, raised over $175,000 for Family Housing Advisory Services.
