“What War Does to the Environment”

War has a devastating impact on the natural and human environment. Following a short discussion of the environmental effects of the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, a glimpse of like in today’s Bosnia and Kosovo will be used to capture the effects of war on the physical, economic, political, and social/cultural environment. The lecture will include a slide presentation as well as remarks concerning conflict prevention and peace building in the Balkans.

Rory J. Conces lectures on social and political philosophy, ethics, American Philosophy and critical reasoning.  He is the editor of the International Third World Studies Journal and Review and has recently given lectures on applied philosophy at universities in China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Kosovo.  This lecture is based on his recent experiences as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Sarajevo.  His current research interests focus on humanitarian intervention and conflict resolution.

Conces earned his B.A. in psychology and philosophy from Creighton University and an M.A. in philosophy from DePaul University. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
