Dr. Martin (Marty) McDaniel is a part-time instructor in Religion. Marty began teaching for UNO in 2001 and teaches courses in New Testament and World Religions.

Marty was raised in upstate New York, and after graduating from high school, he attended several colleges before enrolling in Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Marty graduated from Earlham in 1978 with a B.A. in Religion, and a minor in Political Science. After college he attended several seminaries, and graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, receiving the Master of Divinity degree in 1982. From there he traveled south to Nashville, Tennessee and enrolled in the Graduate Religion program at Vanderbilt University, receiving an M.A. in 1986 and his Ph.D. in 1989, majoring in New Testament and specializing in the Gospels.

While Marty has spent much time studying Christianity, he has great interest in other religions, especially Native American religious beliefs and practices, and Hinduism, which he considers fascinating due to the multiplicity of devotional forms and systems of belief.

Marty’s day job is serving as the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church of Boyden, Iowa. His wife of 30 years, Anne, works and lives in Omaha and faithfully visits Marty on the weekends. They have two adult daughters who live in Nebraska.
