He was born in Jaffa, Israel, and immigrated with his family to Los Angeles in 1981. He attended California State University, Northridge for his B.A. in Political Science. He began his graduate work in the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. He then attended New York University’s Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies where he received his M.A. in Medieval Jewish Thought. His Ph.D is also from NYU. His area of specialization is Medieval Jewish and Islamic Philosophy. He has also studied in University of California, Berkeley, and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Guy Matalon wrote his dissertation on Gersonides and Moses Narboni who are two important Jewish philosophers in the 14th century. His dissertation is entitled, “ Gersonides & Narboni on Immortality and Intellection.” Among the courses he teaches are Introduction to World Religion, Judaic Tradition, Hebrew Bible, and Holocaust. Guy also teaches courses in Judaica throughout the Jewish community of Omaha and is chair of the Rabbi Sidney H. Brooks Lecture Committee. His main interests of research are medieval Jewish and Islamic thought, and Kabbalah. He and his wife Elinor have four children, Talya, Aden, Ori and Eli.
