Oct. 4, 2001 2:30 p.m. - ASH 392 Ground Zero: Presented by Inuit
Country is ground zero on the road to environmental apocalypse: a place,
and a people, who never asked for any of the curses that industrial
societies to the south have brought to them. Persistent organic
pollutants, such as DDT, dioxins and PCBs; global warming that is
accelerating more quickly in the Arctic than anywhere else on Earth and
Atmospheric chemistry in the stratosphere that is accelerating ozone
depletion over the Arctic are a bevy of environmental threats facing the
Inuit; threats that are entirely outside their historical experience.
Bruce E. Johansen, Robert T. Reilly Professor of Communication and Native American Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is the author of The Global Warming Desk Reference (Greenwood Press)
