Dr. Johnson joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1969 with previous teaching experience at Montana State University. He is a native of Omaha and a graduate of Omaha North High School.  His bachelor’s degree is from Columbia University in the City of New York;  his  Ph.D. is from Northwestern University.  His teaching areas are political behavior, methodology, and state and local politics and government. 

Dr. Johnson was awarded the Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award for the Social Sciences in 2001.

Current Research:

Dr. Johnson’s research has focused mainly on race and politics, particularly in the juvenile justice system.  His publications include a book on the Nebraska Legislature and articles in such journals as Social Science Quarterly, Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Policy Review, Journal of Black Studies, and the Western Journal of Black Studies.  He has presented papers at numerous regional and national political science and criminal justice conferences
