Platonic Society Activities

1. Weekly Slow Reading

We have held weekly slow reading sessions successfully in the past years. We get together at a suitable time and read materials of common interests. Among the topics we discussed so far are Kant and Aristotle.

2. Musical Soiree

Once a year we try to hold a musical soiree where talented philosophy students and faculty members perform their favorite musical instruments. We held our inaugural meeting in the piano room at DJ's Dugout in October, 2004.

3. Peer Editing Sessions

We can get together and cooperate on our philosophical projects by way of discussing, reviewing and commenting on each other's work. In fact we encourage our members to send our works to existing journals or student colloquium. Among the undergraduate student conferences we recommend are:

Midwest Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at Creighton University. Contact: Phi Sigma Tau, Department. of Philosophy, Creighton University. Email: pstbeta@creighton,edu

Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at State University of New York at Oneonta, mid-April (Deadline: February 1 each year), Contact: 607-436-8503. Email: philosc@oneota.edu

Southwest Conference for Undergraduate Philosophy at Arizona State University, in the spring. Contact: Philosophy Club, c/o Department of Philosophy, PO Box 872004, Tempe, AZ 85287-2004

5. "Show and Tell"

We don't have to present our views in a formal setting. When we have interesting ideas or thought-provoking stories or mind-boggling puzzles to share, we can convene a meeting and show them to others. It is that easy.

6. Undergraduate Philosophy Colloquia, Workshops, Symposia

More formally, we can organize a session dedicated to a presentation and discussion of a highly philosophical papers. It may take the form of a straightforward presentation, followed by a question and answer period. Or we can have a commentator comment our paper after the presentation in the form of a workshop. Alternatively, we may form a panel discussion or organize a symposium where multiply presentors may give opinions on certain selected topics.

7. Discussions with Professional Philosophers

We may arrange a meeting with visiting philosophers for in-depth conversations with them.

8. The UNO Platonic Society Journal

If time permits we plan to publish a yearly journal  dedicated to recognizing outstanding work in undergraduate philosophy. The journal can publish research articles, humor, comic strips, songs, and short stories that are relevant to philosophy.
